Packing

Leslie: I am startled by how many things I am bringing back to where they were made. I bought an organizing shoulderbag, made in China. Bottles, binkies, bibs, made in China. Electronic toys for the boys, made in China. Some of the baby's clothes, made in China. I'm bringing many things to their homes, but taking a baby away. It is a strange concept.

I've taken a lot of pretty daunting trips, into multiple climates, for various lengths of time, sometimes planning to carry my bags for distances measured in miles, but this one is the most complex. I'm going to China, which is literally half way around the world. I need a visa to get there. I also need antibiotics and a veritable pharmacy of drugs, "just in case." And then, I'm bringing a 9 month old baby home with me! And she will be baby I am only just getting to know.

Daunting.

Games and Toys

Jeremiah Kaplan: More than 3,000 years ago the chinese invented kites. People in China still love too fly them. People make them into the shape of butterflies, birds, tadpoles, and dragons. They also use them to send each other messages when they're at war. Chinese people also invented dominoes. They thought it told the future.

The Red Thread

Alex Kaplan, March 21,2008. 19 days until we go to china:
There is a Chinese tale about the red thread. The red thread is an invisible thread connecting all those destined to be together. It is an indestructable thread. I will give a short summary. there once was a king and a queen who had a wonderful kingdom and loving subjects. One day, they both started getting terrible pains in their hearts. They called in scorcerers, doctors, scientists, and wise men. They drank special tea, breathe in herbs, recite rhyming poetry, and wear pendants, but nothing happened. the pain grew worse every day. A while later, an old peddler walked in, having heard of their pain and suffering. He told them that they were having a red thread pulled from their hearts. He handed them two pairs of spectacles. When they put them on, they saw a red thread winding off into the distance they followed it everywhere untill it ended at a village and ended tied to a babie's foot. They asked who's baby this is, and an old lady said it was their baby. When they returned home, there were celebrations. Their hearts never hurt again.

Animals

Jeremiah Kaplan:
There are lots of animals in china. The most famous one is the giant panda. They are endangered. Many people are trying to save the Giant Panda. Hundreds of years ago, people in china started rasing goldfish. some goldfish can live to be 14 or older!
